You might feel helpless, or even guilty. If you’re honest, you might also feel a flash of frustration before the guilt sets back in.

These feelings are some of the hardest parts of caring for someone with dementia. Not because you don’t love them, but because you can’t always make sense of what’s happening.

What matters most is that dementia behaviors are rarely random. Most of the time, they carry a message. The brain may have lost some of its ability to process and communicate, but the emotional needs underneath those behaviors haven’t gone anywhere.

When does behavior become the language?

As Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia progress, the brain loses its ability to process new information. As this occurs, an individual gradually loses their ability to understand the world around them. When words break down, someone living with dementia may express themselves through certain behaviors — knowingly and unknowingly.

It’s important to understand this and let it guide your actions, because it changes how you respond. A correction or argument won’t reach your family member the way it once did. What they need is someone who can read past the behavior and sense the feeling beneath the surface.

Unmet needs may cause strong emotions like agitation or anxiety in people with dementia. These include pain, hunger, thirst or even noises that may trigger unexpected emotions. The goal for family members and care teams is to identify those needs and meet them where possible.

What is repetition really saying?

Repetition is a behavior associated with dementia that can be challenging to navigate. A phrase like “Are we going to dinner soon?” may sound familiar. In fact, your parent or relative may have asked that question a few times in the same conversation.

Repetitive questions can wear on even the most patient person. But according to the Alzheimer’s Association, when a person with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia repeats a question, they’re usually searching for comfort, security and familiarity. They aren’t trying to frustrate you on purpose, or at all.

The brain changes that come with dementia mean your family member may not remember asking the question a moment ago. In other cases, repetition becomes their way of expressing something they can’t put into words, such as anxiety or a need for reassurance.

When you respond to the feeling, rather than the words, the dynamic shifts. Frustration can give way to understanding.

Instead of explaining that you already answered, try one of these approaches:

Reassure them with a calm voice and a gentle touch.

Redirect to a favorite activity or topic.

Write the answer down and post it somewhere visible.

Focus on the emotion. The question is a signal, not the real problem.

What are agitation and anxiety really saying?

Pacing, pushing back or getting upset for no clear reason are dementia behaviors that can feel sudden and often leave family members wondering what went wrong.

The Alzheimer’s Association is clear on this point: agitation is a direct result of the disease. The older adult in your life experiences fear and fatigue as they try to make sense of a world that no longer makes sense to them. A change in environment, an unfamiliar face or a shift in routine can trigger it.

When agitation surfaces, reassurance usually helps most.

You can use calming phrases, such as:

“You’re safe here.”

“I’m sorry that you’re upset. I know it’s hard.”

“I’ll stay with you until you feel better.”

A calm environment matters, too. Lowering the lights, reducing noise and clearing visual clutter can make a difference in how a person with dementia experiences their surroundings.

What is wandering really saying?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once, and many do so repeatedly. It ranks among the most stressful dementia behaviors for families to manage.

But wandering almost always carries meaning. A person who keeps trying to leave, even from their own home, may be looking for something familiar. They could be trying to make their way back to a former job or a childhood street. They could even be seeking a sense of purpose. Your family member might say they want to “go home” when they are already home, because the place that feels like home in their memory sits further back in time.

Understanding that can change how you respond.

Rather than stopping your loved one outright, try to redirect them:

Invite them to help with a low-pressure task.

Take a short walk together.

Ask about the place or person they seem to be searching for.

Above all, try to reassure the person when they feel lost, abandoned or disoriented. That kind of comfort in the form of a simple “I’m right here with you” often does more than any explanation.

What do you need to hear, too?

If you’ve ever lost your patience and felt guilty afterward or wondered whether you handled a hard moment the right way, your feelings are valid. Family caregivers carry an enormous weight. The behaviors are hard, and the emotional toll is real.

Understanding that these behaviors come from unmet needs, not bad intent, changes the experience of caregiving. Your loved one isn’t trying to make your life harder; they’re reaching for something they can no longer fully name.

That perspective frees you from believing it’s up to you to solve. You only have to respond to the person and support them directly in that moment.

Dementia can also affect confidence and self-esteem. The Alzheimer’s Society notes that people with dementia often feel insecure and unsure of themselves as symptoms progress. Your steady presence becomes an anchor for them, and that matters more than you may realize.

You don’t have to figure this out alone

At Oxford Senior Living, we’re proud to help families navigate this time of uncertainty. At our core, we believe that truly caring for someone means knowing them as a person, not just their care plan or medication list. We love to memorize the stories they love to tell, the grandkids they light up talking about and that fishing trip from decades ago they still swear was the best day of their life.

Our team members show up for residents and families, too. Ask the residents, and they’ll tell you that this community feels like home. That’s no accident; it’s the way Oxford was built, by people who believe you take better care of someone when you love them.

If your family is navigating dementia behaviors and wondering what comes next, we’d love to talk. Reach out to one of the nearest Oxford Senior Living communities to learn more about our memory care approach and to see what it looks like when a person with dementia is fully known and deeply loved. Repetition, agitation and wandering are often signs of emotional needs that the person can no longer express clearly with words.

Behavior often becomes a form of communication. As dementia progresses, families and caregivers may need to look beyond the behavior itself to understand the underlying feeling.

Reassurance is often more effective than correction. A calm voice, familiar routines and gentle redirection can help more than arguing or trying to reason through the moment.

Agitation and wandering often reflect fear or the need for comfort. Creating a calm environment and responding with empathy can make these moments easier to manage.

Caregivers need support too. Understanding dementia behaviors can reduce guilt and frustration, and the right senior living communities can provide compassionate support for both residents and families.

When your mom becomes convinced that her purse has gone missing, or your dad seems a little unsure of his surroundings despite being at home, your heart may start to break all over again.
